Which Custom Cap Should You Choose? A Buyer's Guide

A cap is the hardest-working thing you can put a logo on. It gets worn constantly, it suits everyone, and you are not juggling a size run the way you are with shirts. But "cap" covers a lot of ground — a soft low-profile six-panel and a tall foam trucker are different products, and they do different things to your design.

Here is a plain-English guide to choosing one, and what each cap in the Custom Fox range is actually good at.

How do you choose a custom cap?

Three things decide it, and they are all visible in the photos once you know what you are looking at:

  • Profile — how tall the front of the cap stands up. This changes the look more than anything else, and it changes how much room your design has.
  • Structure — whether the front panel is stiffened or soft. This decides whether your design sits flat and square or curves with the head.
  • Closure — snapback, strap, clasp, or a fitted crown with no closure at all. This is the one that matters most when you are ordering for a group.

Work through those three and there is usually only one or two caps left. You can also filter the whole range by all three on the custom caps page.

What do low, mid and high profile mean?

Profile is how tall the front of the cap stands up. Low sits close to your head and reads relaxed. High stands up on its own and gives you the most room to print on. Mid sits between the two, and is the safe pick if you are not sure.

Structured or unstructured — which should you print on?

A structured cap has a stiffened front panel, so it holds its shape off your head and keeps a design flat and square. An unstructured cap is soft and follows the shape of your head — more casual, and a print curves with it.

If you are printing a logo with straight lines, a lock-up or fine type, structured is the safer surface. If you want a relaxed, worn-in look and your design can take a bit of curve, unstructured suits it better.

The Frame Perforated Cap, the Icon Cap and the Frame Two-Tone Camo Cap are structured. The Surf Cap, the Surf Cotton Camo Cap, the Frame Soft Camo Cap and the Comfort Colours Sunwashed Cap are unstructured. You can see the rest either way — structured caps or unstructured caps.

Fitted, snapback or strap — what's the difference?

Adjustable caps close with a snapback, a strap or a clasp, and one size covers almost everyone — the easy choice when you are ordering for a team and do not know everyone's size. Fitted caps stretch to sit closer and neater, and come in real sizes.

  • Snapback — the plastic click-strip at the back. The classic trucker and baseball closure, and the most common in the range.
  • Strap or clasp — a self-fabric strap with a metal slider, or a metal clasp. Tidier and lower-key than a snapback, which is why it sits on the low-profile caps.
  • Fitted — no strap and no snapback at all. The Stock Flex Cap and the Icon Flex Cap both come in S, M, L and XL in a stretch twill, so they sit snug with nothing on the back to break up the shape.

One thing worth knowing before you order for a group: the two fitted caps are the only styles in the range that need sizes. Everything else is one size.

Which custom cap is best for a team or club?

An adjustable one-size cap, so you are not collecting sizes from thirty people. The Mesh Trucker at $29.95 is the workhorse — high profile, a big flat front for a club logo, twelve colours, and it is UPF 50+ rated. The Surf Cap is the other obvious one, with 48 colours to match almost any club palette.

If you want the team in something sharper for presentation nights or a committee, the Stock Flex Cap in real sizes looks a step up — just budget time to collect sizes.

Which cap suits a business uniform?

A clean, structured mid or low profile in a solid colour. The Icon Cap is the straightest answer — a structured six-panel in 100% cotton with a contoured crown, in ten colours, so it sits neatly with a polo or a work shirt. The Access Cap is the lower, softer version if your brand is more relaxed.

Outdoors all day? The Frame Perforated Cap has perforated side panels in a light recycled polyester-spandex, and the Nylon Wide Brim Bucket Hat gives real shade with a chin strap for windy sites.

What's the best cap for a big front logo?

A high-profile structured front gives your design the most room. The Frame Foam Trucker is the one to beat — a tall, flat foam front that holds a large logo square, in twelve colours. The Frame Two-Tone Camo Cap is the other tall, structured front, and its dome is a solid colour, so a logo sits on plain fabric with the camo kept to the peak.

The other route is the Surf Cap. It is only mid profile, but it has a single front panel instead of two, so there is no centre seam running through the middle of your artwork. For a wide wordmark or anything that crosses the centre line, that matters more than height does. The Surf Cotton Camo Cap is built the same way, if you want that uninterrupted front in camo.

Which cap has the most colours?

The Surf Cap, by a distance — 48 colours. Next is the Class Two-Tone Cap at 17 two-tone combinations, then the Bucket Hat at 13. The Mesh Trucker, the Frame Foam Trucker and the Comfort Colours Sunwashed Cap all sit at 12.

If you are matching a brand colour exactly, start with the Surf Cap and work backwards — it is the only style in the range where you are near-certain to find the shade.

What about camo?

Three styles, all at $34.95, and they are genuinely different shapes.

  • The Surf Cotton Camo Cap — mid profile, soft and unstructured, with a single uninterrupted front panel. Tree Camo and Desert Camo.
  • The Frame Soft Camo Cap — the taller high-profile version, also unstructured. Tree Camo and Desert Camo.
  • The Frame Two-Tone Camo Cap — high profile with a structured front, and the camo is kept to the peak. The dome is solid black or natural, so your design sits on plain fabric rather than competing with the print.

Because the camo is printed rather than woven, the pattern varies a little from cap to cap — which is the point of it.

What about sun protection and bucket hats?

Four styles in the range are hats rather than caps, and they are the ones to reach for when the sun is the point:

On the cap side, the Mesh Trucker is UPF 50+ rated. For a cricket club or an outdoor market stall, a cap for the players and wide-brims for the scorers and volunteers is the usual combination — see custom cricket club gear.

Are there women's fits?

Yes — two. The Women's Access Cap is a low-profile six-panel cut for a neater fit with a metal-clasp fastener, and the Women's Bucket Hat is the snugger version of the standard bucket. Everything else in the range is unisex one-size, which is usually what you want for a mixed team anyway.
